Being
asked to choose just five favourites from Sanjeev Kapoor's
cookbook armoury is like choosing your favourite sweet from
a box of 'Quality Streets'.....you really like them all and
you'd rather not just choose one!!
What
I like about Kapoor's recipes is his unashamed love of cooking.
He does not compromise on ingredients and doesn't dress up
his recipes with fripperies that add to the presentation but
not to the taste. Put simply, he sticks to the basics as he
sees them. His 'Khazana
of Indian Recipes' was a No 1 best seller in India for
14 months and is easily his best book in my opinion. This
is followed closely by 'Khana
Khazana - A Celebration of Indian Cookery' which is for
the more ambitious cook who can source King fish, Betki fillets,
Pomfret and Rohu from their local supermarket! It is a real
pleasure to just browse through this book, even if you only
end up cooking eggs!
Sanjeev
Kapoor's passion and commitment to Indian cuisine is evident
is all his books. Although he covers a range of foods - from
starters and soups right through to desserts - when he talks
about Indian cooking, even the recipe names have their original
names (with English equivalents in brackets). This grand love
affair with Indian Cuisine is the source of my third favourite
of his books 'Simply
Indian'. There is nothing simple about it. Sanjeev has
also dressed up in traditional regal dress with turban and
pearls for the front cover. Inside the book are recipes fit
for a Maharajah.
Ever
mindful of the need to eat well, it was a toss up between
his 'Khazana of Healthy Tasty Recipes' and 'Low
Calorie Vegetarian Cookbook' four fourth place in the
favourites list. The latter won because it weighed in at a
lot less...calorifically speaking!
And
finally, a chef who isn't afraid of the microwave, Sanjeev
Kapoor has even devoted an entire book to 'Microwave
Cooking Made Easy'...bless him.
