Tyeb Mehta
lifts Christie's South Asian Art Sale

 The
most important work by Indian artist
Tyeb Mehta from his groundbreaking 'Mahishasura'
series helped left the sale of South
Asian art by London auction house Christie's
on 11th June 2012. The South Asian Modern
+ Contemporary Art sale realised £4,102,938
and was 77% sold by value and 77% sold
by lot. The top lot was Tyeb Mehta (1925-2009),
Untitled (Mahishasura), 1996, which
was bought by an Asian Institution for
£1,385,250. Yamini Mehta, Director,
Senior Specialist, Christie’s London,
said: “The sale performed well
across the board with works which were
fresh to the market and from private
collections securing strong prices.
We are pleased to have achieved 72%
market share against our two UK competitors
with this annual London sale. Tyeb Mehta
and the Modern Masters including S.H
Raza continued to attract healthy competition;
the Contemporary section led by Pakistani
miniatures and Bharti Kher inspired
a renewed hunger for younger avant-garde
in this field". |
