Dell hosts a roundtable
on education & technology
15th May 2012
Dell
hosted a roundtable in conjunction with Apps for
Good, the brainchild of non-profit organisation
Center for Digital Inclusion (CDI) Europe, on
Tuesday 15th May 2012 at The Hoxton Apprentice
in London. The Apps for Good initiative, which
develops talented and employable young people
by running courses on creating mobile and Facebook
applications (apps), has grown from its first
pilot course with 9 unemployed young people aged
16-25 in South London to launching in more than
40 schools across England within 2 years. By bringing
together a mix of technology journalists, educators
and entrepreneurs and key Dell employees involved
with education, social good and young people,
the roundtable - hosted by CDI Trustee Charles
Leadbetter, a leading authority on innovation
and creativity - hopes to reach out to a wider
audience of partners, schools and experts to expand
the Apps for Good initiative.
About Apps
for Good
'Apps for Good' is the brainchild
of non-profit organisation Center for Digital
Inclusion (CDI) Europe, part of the CDI global
network. In partnership with Dell, and supported
by people and businesses in techonology and the
creative world including O2, ThomsonReuters and
Ogilvy, Apps for Good develops talented and employable
young people by running courses on creating mobile
and Facebook applications (apps). The courses
are run by Apps for Good, its affiliates and partners
with significant input from industry experts with
access to Apps for Good resources available on
an open source basis.
Apps for Good aims to:
Ignite
a passion for technology and social enterprise
in young people in the UK
Encourage
young people to use technology to tackle problems
for social good
Increase
the entrepreneurial skills and confidence of
young people
Bridge
the gap between young people and the business
networks and knowledge that can help them
Build
a connected world of young people, business
volunteers and educators, inspiring each other
to solve problems and succeed through the wonders
of mobile technology
During the Apps for Good
course, students go through an entrepreneurial
process identifying what is wrong with their world
before designing a way of fixing it with a mobile
app. The course gives young people a foundation
in entrepreneurship, community involvement, problem-solving
and team work as well as design and some technical
skills.
