Puja Gupta donned a sexy dress made of vegetables
for a new PETA India advertisement. In direct
contrast to Lady Gaga's famous dress made
of meat, Ms Gupta's dress is made entirely
of lettuce leaves and other vegetables next
to the caption "Let Vegetarianism Grow
on You".

on Primark grows over Bangladesh tragedy |
Primark
today faces unprecedented pressure to ensure
that the tragedy witnessed in Bangladesh a
week ago today never happens again. The call
- issued on International Workers Day, one
week on since the tragedy - also goes to Matalan
and Mango, and the other retailers who bought
clothes made by workers in the block. The
eight-storey building collapsed on Wednesday
(24th April 2013) 18 miles from the Bangladeshi
capital Dhaka killing more than 400 people.

targets Primark over Bangladesh workplace
disaster |
As
rescuers continue to search for survivors
from the collapsed Bangladeshi block where
workers made Primark clothes, campaigners
today (27th April 2013) protested outside
its flagship store tomorrow in support of
victims and their families. The demonstration
at the store in Londons Marble Arch
demanded the retailer pays full compensation
to the injured workers and the families.

Initiative Sewa Day Appoints Deputy Chair |
Redhotcurry.com
Founder Lopa Patel MBE has been appointed
Deputy Chair of global volunteering initiative
Sewa Day to help spearhead the project's marketing
strategy and primary schools programme. Sewa
is the Sanskrit word for "selfless service"
and since its launch in 2010 Sewa Day has
exceeded all expectations with tens of thousands
of people rendering their service to others.
Last year, an estimated 50,000 people took
part.

caste discrimination to be outlawed in Britain |
Peers
are celebrating victory after they won a vote
on 22nd April 2013 to
include caste alongside other forms of discrimination
in equalities law. This comes despite the
House of Commons having rejected the proposal
twice with Members of Parliament preferring
an education programme over legislation.

Steel
magnate Lakshmi Mittal has toppled off the
top of The Sunday Times Rich List published
on 21st April 2013, after securing the richest
man in Britain spot for eight consecutive
years between 2005 and 2012. The UK's richest
Asians this year are Sri and Gopi Hinduja
with an estimated £10.6 billion.

Search giant Google has helped citizen cartographers
build useful street maps in Pakistan and it
is now hoping to do same globally. Google
today (11th April 2013) announced that anyone
can help to provide detailed local information
to Google Maps to transform a simple map into
a more detailed and accurate representation
of an area's local treasures. Once approved,
improvements appear within a matter of minutes.

shortlist for the Asian Women of Achievement
Awards 2013 was announced today (24th March
2013). Among the 55 nominees shortlisted are
Roma Agrawal, a young engineer who has been
involved with the development of 'The Shard'
and three (unrelated) Chakrabartis including
actress and writer Lolita Chakrabarti; Founder
of Nameless Media Group, Jaya Chakrabarti
and BBC education and social affairs correspondent,
Reeta Chakrabarti.

24th March 2013, Bhaktivedanta Manor celebrated
Holi, the festival of colours, and its 40th
Anniversary as Home of Lord Krishna.
Marking this event was a grand havan with

elected as a City of London Common Councilman |
Dhruv
Patel, 29, was last night elected to the Court
of the Common Council at the City of London
Corporation as an Independent in the ward
of Aldgate, making him the first ever person
from a black and minority ethnic background
(BME) to be elected to a business ward. This
role is equivalent to that of a local councillor
but has the additional responsibilitiesof
representing the UK's financial services industries
abroad.

Groups honoured as Sewa Pioneers Award Winners
2013 |
A
range of voluntary projects including feeding
a thousand underprivileged people in Hong
Kong; clearing 80 sacks of litter from the
Grand Union Canal towpath in Southall and
sprucing up a hospice in Luton were among
those honoured with a Sewa Pioneers Award
on 20th March 2013 at the House of Commons.
The awards recognised those with the spirit
of selflessness who devoted time to the service
of others through global volunteering initiative
Sewa Day.

Educational
researcher Sugata Mitra is the winner of the
$1 million TED Prize 2013. His wish is to
build a 'School in the Cloud', where children
can explore and learn from one another. At
TED2013, Sugata Mitra said "my wish is
to help design the future of learning by supporting
children all over the world to tap into their
innate sense of wonder and work together."
As a part of this year's historic TED Prize,
Sugata Mitra receive $1,000,000 seed funding
for this initiative.

David Cameron in India |

Cameron led a British trade delegation to
India, his second since becoming Prime Minister
in 2010. During the three-day visit the Prime
Minister visited a women's university, met
with Sonia Gandhi and laid a wreath at the
memorial to the 1919 Amritsar massacre. Writing
in the memorial book of condolence, Mr Cameron
described the massacre as "a deeply shameful
event in British history", adding "we
must never forget what happened here".

escalation of its year-long 'One Billion Rising'

in the largest day of mass action ever to
stop violence against women and girls. The
campaign began as a call to action based on
the statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet
will be beaten or raped during her lifetime.

have opened for the inaugural Scottish Asian
Women's Association (SAWA) Awards for achievement
and excellence, recognising the contribution
made to the Asian community, and Scotland
as a whole, by Asian women. SAWA was launched
in April last year by The First Minister,
Alex Salmond and is supported by HRH Princess
Badiya bint El Hassan of Jordan. Closing date
for nominations is , 18th February 2013.

Black Sisters (SBS) held a Protest Against
Sexual Violence in India outside the Indian
High Commission in London on Monday 7th January
2012 highlighting the many acts of horrific
sexual violence that take place every day
in India. "The world's largest democracy
was named the worst country in the G20 countries
for violence against women in the recent Trust
Law Survey." By drawing attention to
this horror SBS hope to shame the Indian government
into acting now by making public spaces safe
for women.

& Abetting' report calls for £8bn
UK aid to be transferred to the military |
A
new book by Jonathan Foreman, senior research
fellow at think-tank Civitas, urges the Government
to revolutionise its approach to overseas
aid. Among its recommendations is a shift
of one third of the UK's £8 billion
overseas aid budget to the military to ensure
that Britain is capable of mounting swift
and effective emergency relief operations
in the wake of disasters such as earthquakes,
tsunamis and famines. The book also adds that
the pledge to increase UK aid spending to
0.7 per cent of GDP by 2015 (spending an extra
£3 billion over the next three years)
should be scrapped.

Year Honours List 2013 |
Fewer
ethnic minority individuals were recognised
in The New Year Honours List 2013 despite
a demographic increase showing that 14%* of
the UK is now from an ethnic minority community.
Of the 1,223 people recognised, only 5% were
from an ethnic miority community - this compares
to 7.6% of ethnic minority recipients in 2011
and 12% ethnic minority recipients in 2012.
